Bhadra - Dandeli - Madhei
The Indian states of Goa and Karnataka are second to none when it comes to their fauna variety. The Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa, whilst housing many mammal species, is known for its wide array of amphibians and reptiles, and mostly for being a bird watcher’s paradise.
Continue down further south and this green oasis, which forms a continuous belt along the Western Ghats in Karnataka, now develops into the Dandeli Anshi Tiger Reserve, recently renamed to the Kali Tiger Reserve. Comparable to the Mhadei forest when it comes to avifauna, the woods of Karnataka are also home to lorises and flying squirrels. However it is the hornbills in these forests that steal the majority of its limelight and the Dandeli Anshi Wilderness is a must visit.
Resuming travel southward, we have the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, a terrain that is best described as ‘a universe of greenery’, just like many other wildernesses in southern India. Being surrounded by the steep slopes of the Mullayanagiri, Hebbegiri, Gangegiri and Bababudangiri hills makes this protected area a landlocked animal paradise.
