In 1983, three wildlife sanctuaries in the area namely, Chilla, Motichur and Rajaji sanctuaries were merged into one and Rajaji National Park was formed with the area of 820 sq.km. Declared as Tiger reserve in 2015, Rajaji became the second tiger reserve in Uttarakhand.  The dense jungles here forms a habitat for vivacious wildlife & is most renowned for its Elephants & Himalayan Black Bear which can be sighted in the higher reaches of the park. Over 315 species of birds are found in the park including residents & migratory. This area is the first staging ground after the migratory birds cross over the Himalayas into the Indian subcontinent.
